When a rogue comet exploded mankind was awed by the fireworks in space. But the awe turned to fear and terror as the comet's contents rained down across the globe. Billions of pods scattered across the planet, shattering civilization overnight.
Earth was changed overnight as the planet was twisted and terraformed in a terrifying way. Shane and his family were determined to stay alive, to keep as many people alive as possible. They were willing to fight, to learn, and to adapt. But an alien species always has the upper hand against a native one who has no means of defense. Normally, that would be true, but they are determined to prove that wrong.
They'll fight, and cling to what civilization they can as they try to rebuild. But they have a lot to deal with. And good reason to be...

if you like FPS games, or rescource management games, you will like this novel I fyou like novels of similar type, again you will enjoy. He has written what on the face of it appears to be a military sci fi novel, with the exception that mil sci fi ussually has no main character, this one dows, the book seemlessly blends rescource management and development with shooter action and a strong main character that is a joy ot live vicariously through. the character reacts intelligently to conditions, and fights for the right (preservation of the species in this case,) Despite a strong desire to end several individuals, who though they be a thorn in his side also act as a thorn to the aliens, so he lets em live, (I was a lil disapointed, despite it being the right decision strategically). good book I am waiting for the sequel.Product details

Afraid of the Dark eBook Chris Hechtl Reviews
good book, sometime a little long on explaing items and editing( had to fill blanks sometime. overall it gave me the chills thinking about if this really could happen. if their is a sequel to this book, i will buy it.
I read the sample and was intrigued enough to throw away good money on trash. I read the whole book so I could write this review from first hand knowledge. After the sample it is repetitive - same thing, different day. They break into a home, kill the aliens, clean out the stuff they need to survive, and do it again day after day. Yes! The story goes day after day like some one's very dual and boring diary. He spends more pages on the council discussing food rationing then he does on action scenes. People are always talking - whining about doing the dishes, cooking, cleaning toilets, the weather, not enough food, "I'm board", etc. They even talk about disasters and death-defying action like discussing the weather. The author has taken a great idea for a story and killed it. There is your action thriller - seeing how much you can read before you are bored to death.
Sorry Chris love your other work but i could not finish this one. The storyline is good, but there's only so many times you can read the same clichés, especially how people lose control of their bladder when scared.
I haven't been able to complete it. it just doesn't grab me like the rest of Chris' work unfortunately.
I can see and appreciate what it's trying to do, do I love it? no, Would I read a revised version of it? definitely
I enjoyed this book despite series of the flaws such as two or three spelling errors and the weird character transition in the first act. It did have a unusually large number of plot relayed named characters and the aliens while kinda cool are scientifically impossible due to their extreme growth rate and the high metabolism and decay rate
Starts strong then becomes an endurance read with the occasionally interest gaining scene. The rating was chosen because it is a good read but takes dedication. I understand repetition was wanted and could be had while still remaining interesting and that is where the author failed. Loved the aliens and would have liked more scenes involving them, especially how information was gathered and the cost.
I enjoyed this book, it was a nice to read a apocalypse book that felt "real", and by that I mean that the characters react like I felt the majority of people would be in real life. There is a somewhat repetitiveness that adds to the atmosphere of the story.
Overall I recommend this book for the action, intersesting characters, aliens, alien fighting, and refreshing non-zombie apocalypse. Keep up the good work, and hope there is a sequel...
